March 21th 2016
An adventurouse riding trail in the Roman countryside, dotted with yellow and pink flowers in the beautiful pine forest of Castel Fusano, where the blue sky smells of saltiness and freedom. Here we will be surprised by the spectacle around us, where the sea meets the Mediterranean landscape, lulled by the elegant gait of our horses, riding on the side of the Tiber river, until arriving at the Castello di Giulio II.
It was built in the between 1483 and 1486 by Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, the future (Pope Julius II), to control their family possessions and access to Rome from the sea along the Tiber.
The fortification was located between the medieval walled village of Ostia Antica and the Tiber, until the flood of 1557 which changed in the course of the river, leaving dry moat. The fortress was long military stronghold and papal customs.
The work presents innovative technical criteria and considerable military knowledge. Triangular shape, with towers on top: two circular ("washers") and one larger polygon, as tall as the walls to create a unique wall-walk around the entire perimeter. A wide moat, fed by the Tiber, originally ran along the perimeter.
Near the castle this charming horse riding trail continue visiting the Church of St. Aurea, on the site of the early Christian basilica, one of the first in the world; the main altar of the church there is the majestic painting by Andrea Sacchi. In the back part there is the Bishop's Palace with beautiful frescoes that enrich the charming medieval town, also known for being the set of the video of U2 in "All I want is you".
The horse ridin trail into the village of Ostia Antica warns unmistakable sense of time and history that together evoke an atmosphere of 'secular peace' while in the contrast between the mass of the Castello di Giulio II 'and the architectural lightness of the cathedral of Sant' Aurea, in a frame of walls and towers, and in the 'row' of miniature houses.
Let's enjoy a moment of peace in this corner where art and historical memories that mark this charming place, the importance that has played in ancient Ostia, when was the real '' Rome's port, as would its name says: the door through which arrived in the Eternal City supplies and people (wealth and culture) and through which, above all, came Christianity. We love this horse riding trail!
Riding along the Saline, we will have a long trail between the crops and the green of the Tenuta Torlonia, peering in the archaeological area of Ancient Ostia, we rides untill the embankment where we see the beach! That's another incredible experience for horses and riders in the beautifull Nature of Rome, full of romance and adventure!
